Salou eats from the sea and from the rice pan. The town grew around a natural harbour that shipped wine in Roman times and sent Jaume I's fleet to Mallorca in 1229; today its port breakwater holds seafood bars such as Terramar, open since 1983, and the Club Nàutic's rice restaurant. Rice is the local obsession, the focus of the Per a gustos, els arrossos rice days each spring, and squid has its own Festa del Calamar, whose 50th edition in 2025 sent 36 boats out for a week of fishing. On Thursdays the Tasta Salou route serves a plate and a glass for €7 in about a dozen bars. Beyond the resort grid of Carles Buïgas, the cooking turns Catalan: romesco and xató from the Tarragona coast, calçots from Valls in winter, vermouth from Reus at noon. Cambrils, next door, adds two Michelin stars to the coast, and the Priorat's slate-terraced vineyards lie inland behind Reus.

Peak food season: Spring and late autumn: the rice days from late April into May, the Sabor Salou street food market in late May, then the Festa del Calamar squid days in late November and the Christmas vermouth route in December, when the resort crowds have gone.
Local dining hours: Lunch runs roughly 13:00 to 16:00 and dinner from about 19:30 to 23:00. Many restaurants serve a weekday menú del día at lunch, some close one or two days a week, and some seasonal places close for the winter after October.
Tipping: Service is included in Spanish restaurant bills, so tipping is not expected. Leaving small change or rounding up after a good meal is common but never obligatory.
Salou's signature dishes include Romesco, Xató, Arròs negre, Paella de marisc, Fideuà. See our signature dishes chapter for where to eat each.
