Reims eats and drinks on top of its chalk. The champagne houses of the Saint-Nicaise hill age their wine in Gallo-Roman chalk pits, and the Champagne hillsides, houses and cellars have been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2015; Ruinart, founded here in 1729, is the oldest established house, and the riddling table Veuve Clicquot devised in 1816 is still how champagne is cleared. The city's own specialities are older: pain d'épices, made by a guild Henri IV recognised in 1596, the pink twice-baked biscuit rose dipped in champagne since the 1690s, jambon de Reims pressed in its jelly, and a mustard made with champagne wine. Around them sits the country cooking of Champagne: potée champenoise, pig's trotters from Sainte-Menehould, andouillette from Troyes and the Chaource and Langres cheeses. The Art Deco Halles du Boulingrin, opened in 1929 and reopened in 2012, hold the covered market on Friday and Saturday mornings, and five restaurants hold Michelin stars in the 2026 guide, among them the three-star Assiette Champenoise at Tinqueux.

When to come hungry in Reims
- Peak food season
- Late summer to December: the grape harvest in the villages around Reims, Les Relais du Goût in mid-September, the independent winegrowers' fair in early November and the Christmas market from late November, with its chalets by the station.
- Local dining hours
- Lunch runs roughly 12:00 to 14:00 and dinner from about 19:00 to 22:00. Many restaurants close on Sunday and Monday, and the brasseries around Place Drouet d'Erlon keep the longest hours.
- Tipping
- Service is included in French restaurant bills, so no tip is expected. Rounding up or leaving a couple of euros after a good meal is common but never obligatory.
