Chattanooga eats like a mid-size Southern city that quietly invented America's snack cabinet. The MoonPie has been made here since 1917, Krystal steamed its first square slider downtown in 1932, and McKee Foods bakes every Little Debbie in neighbouring Collegedale. The current scene is more ambitious: the 2025 Michelin Guide American South named four Chattanooga rooms, all within a short drive of the Southside, and the 2026 James Beard semifinals tapped both Calliope and Niedlov's Bakery. Between those poles sit the constants, meat-and-three counters on McCallie Avenue, fried whiting on the Big Nine, lazy susan tables on Dodds Avenue and a Sunday market of 300 producers under the First Horizon Pavilion. Eat the new Southside, but keep a morning for the old counters.
