Tremont Tavern has hand-crafted burgers and a deep beer list on Hixson Pike in Chattanooga since 2006, a neighbourhood pub that takes its patties seriously.

Order: The house burger, medium, with a rotating Tennessee draft.

Tip: Kitchen runs to 22:00 most nights and 23:00 Thursday to Saturday; Monday opens at 15:00, not lunch.

Lupi's Pizza Pies has hand-tossed New York-style pizza on Broad Street in Chattanooga since 1996, Dorris Shober's homegrown answer to the chains.

Order: A hand-tossed large with local toppings and craft beer.

Tip: Closed Mondays downtown. The dough and sauce are made daily; expect a proper rise, not a cracker crust.

White Duck Taco Shop ★ 4.3

White Duck Taco Shop serves globally-topped tacos counter-style on McCallie Avenue in Chattanooga, opened June 2025 with a huge outdoor patio and full bar.

Tip: Owners Adam Lutz and Nelson Taylor spent six years building the site; a house brewery, Totality, is being added on the campus.

Tip: Closed Sunday and Monday. The MLK original is tiny; Brainerd Road and East Brainerd locations take the overflow.

Wally's Restaurant ★ 4.2

Wally's Restaurant has served Chattanooga meat-and-three plates on McCallie Avenue since 1937, from drive-in burgers to today's homecooked vegetables.

Tip: Breakfast from 06:00 on weekdays; Saturday closes at noon and Sunday is dark. Cash-friendly, counter-fast service.

Bea's Restaurant ★ 4.3

Bea's Restaurant spins all-you-can-eat Southern cooking on lazy susan tables on Dodds Avenue in Chattanooga, four generations of one family at the stove.

Tip: Wednesday to Sunday 11:00 to 20:00 only. Tables are shared-spin; go hungry and let the staff keep the bowls refilled.

City Cafe Diner keeps a 388-item menu going 24 hours a day on Broad Street in downtown Chattanooga, with towering cakes and breakfast at any hour.

Order: All-day breakfast and a slice from the 90-cake case.

Tip: The only true 24-hour room downtown; it absorbs the post-bar crowd after 02:00, so daytime is the quieter visit.

The Purple Daisy Picnic Cafe ★ 4.2

The Purple Daisy Picnic Cafe plates barbecue and picnic fare at the base of Lookout Mountain in St. Elmo, Chattanooga, next to the Incline Railway.

Tip: Closed Sunday. Order at the counter and take the side garden; it is the natural lunch stop after riding the Incline down.

Tip: Closed Sunday and Monday. The Chatt Taste food tour routes through here for good reason; go off-peak for a table.

Ankar's Hoagies has stacked steamed hoagies and gyros for Chattanooga since 1979, a family-run counter institution still working Brainerd Road daily.

Order: The classic hoagie, steamed, with the works.

Tip: Brainerd closes at 16:00 Monday and Tuesday but runs to 20:00 the rest of the week; the Hixson Pike shop keeps longer evening hours.

Pickle Barrel ★ 4.1

Pickle Barrel has fed Chattanooga from a century-old flatiron building on Market Street since 1982, burgers and fried pickles until 03:00 nightly.

Tip: Strictly 21 and over at all times. The wedge-shaped roof deck is the best people-watching perch downtown.

Hi-Fi Clyde's ★ 4.1

Tip: Friday and Saturday the bar pours to 01:00; weeknights it winds down at 23:00, and the kitchen holds to 22:00 every night.

Tip: Doors close at 14:00 weekdays and 15:00 weekends; it is a breakfast-and-lunch operation, not a dinner stop.

Tip: Friday and Saturday the kitchen runs to midnight. Expect a wait after Lookouts games; the banana pudding travels well.
