Oval glutinous-rice balls filled with liquid palm sugar, boiled and rolled in grated coconut, made in Gianyar town since 1980 and sold by the bag.
Klepon is spread across maritime Southeast Asia: it appears in the Javanese Serat Centhini of 1814, and Balinese and Bugis-Makassar communities use it in ritual offerings. Gianyar's version has its own shape. It is slightly oval because the palm sugar goes in as a liquid before boiling, not as a solid piece as in Javanese klepon. Klepon Gianyar 1980 began after a provincial cooking contest, and its maker was later invited to Jakarta to serve state guests.
Warung Klepon Gianyar has sold klepon, rice-flour balls filled with liquid palm sugar, from a small shop on Jalan Kalantaka in Gianyar, Bali, since 1980.
