Cancún weekend: Yucatecan downtown and the lagoon ★ 4.6

First-time visitor, two days2 days

A weekend that spends the mornings at downtown's markets and fondas, eats Yucatecan home cooking at lunch, and saves the lagoon and Puerto Juárez for seafood.

  1. Day 1: Saturday: market breakfast, lonchería lunch, Las Palapas at night

    Morning
    Mercado 23 between 08:00 and 11:00, while the fondas still have everything: cochinita pibil tacos or salbutes, then papadzules or relleno negro if the day's pot has them. Bring small peso notes.
    Afternoon
    Lunch at Lonchería El Pocito on Calle 31 Norte: queso relleno in tomato broth, papadzules and the black-bean and pork tamal from the chalkboard. Arrive early, before the lunch crowd clears it.
    Evening
    Parque de las Palapas from about 19:00, when the square fills: tacos, a quesadilla and esquites from the stalls, then a marquesita with Edam cheese and cajeta from the carts.
  2. Day 2: Sunday: Michelin breakfast, Puerto Juárez seafood, dinner on the dock

    Morning
    Breakfast at La Casa de las Mayoras, in the MICHELIN Guide, which opens at 08:00 on Sundays: chilaquiles or huevos motuleños with a batido.
    Afternoon
    Lunch at Kiosco Verde in Puerto Juárez, open from 12:30 (it closes on Tuesdays): pulpo zarandeado, lobster empanadas and the Cozumel-style conch ceviche, and ask what the catch was.
    Evening
    Dinner at Navíos on its dock over Nichupté Lagoon at km 19.5; book a palapa table for sunset and order the chile xcatic stuffed with fish ceviche, then the tuna tartare. Last orders before its 22:00 close.

Cancún on a budget: carnitas, fish tacos and taquerías ★ 4.4

On a budget, one day downtown1 day

One day of downtown eating for the price of a single hotel-zone dinner: carnitas for breakfast, fish tacos at lunch, pastor tacos at night.

  1. Day 1: Friday: carnitas, fish tacos, pastor after dark

    Morning
    Carnitas Don Enrique on Avenida Tikal, open 08:00 to 15:00 from Wednesday to Friday: a surtida of mixed cuts as tacos or tortas with the pickled green habanero salsa.
    Afternoon
    Los de Pescado on Avenida Tulum, which closes at 17:30: fish tacos with the tamarind sauce, a marlin pescadilla and a tostada de ceviche, at about MXN 62 a taco on the operator's menu.
    Evening
    Los Parejas on Avenida Tecnológico from 16:00 to 01:00: bistec and pastor tacos at 35 pesos each in January 2026, then a costilla or tripa taco and an agua de horchata.

Cancún seafood day: Avenida Nader to the Puerto Juárez coast ★ 4.3

Seafood lovers, one day1 day

A coffee on Avenida Nader, a long seafood lunch on the Puerto Juárez coast and a lagoon-side raw bar at night.

  1. Day 1: Wednesday: café lechero, Puerto Juárez lunch, raw bar at night

    Morning
    Café Nader at Avenida Nader 5 from 07:00: café lechero with pan dulce from the ovens.
    Afternoon
    Lunch at Mar-Bella on the Puerto Juárez to Punta Sam road, open 12:00 to 20:00: pick oysters, octopus or boquinete from the display and say how you want them cooked.
    Evening
    Fred's at Boulevard Kukulcán km 14.5, which serves until midnight: green shrimp aguachile or Rockefeller oysters from the raw bar, then a lobster.
