The Naoussa PDO zone west of Thessaloniki is the most important red wine appellation in Greece, producing Xinomavro from an indigenous variety that resembles Nebbiolo in its tannin structure and ageing capacity. The old market district has tavernas serving the full Macedonian meze repertoire: kavourmas, smoked Veria pepper, local feta, and the exceptional Veria apple production used in preserves and liqueurs. More affordable and less touristic than central Thessaloniki.
