The Naoussa PDO zone west of Thessaloniki is the most important red wine appellation in Greece, producing Xinomavro from an indigenous variety that resembles Nebbiolo in its tannin structure and ageing capacity. More affordable and less touristic than central Thessaloniki.

The route passes through the Macedonian agricultural plain producing the summer vegetables and melons sold in Thessaloniki markets.
The port city of Kavala on the Aegean coast is a longer day trip but delivers the finest fresh tuna and swordfish in range of Thessaloniki. The working fishing harbour supplies the Kavala tavernas with whatever arrived that morning. The combination of a Byzantine fortress walk and a harbour seafood lunch makes it one of the better full-day food trips from the city.
Kozani in western Macedonia produces the finest Greek saffron: Krokos Kozanis PDO, recognised alongside Kashmiri and Iranian varieties as a world-class crocus sativus cultivation. October is the harvest month. The Krokos Kozanis Cooperative offers tours of the processing facility and sells fresh-year saffron. A food souvenir trip that connects to the broader spice heritage of the region.
