Tip: Walk-in only, party of six max. Get there before 6pm or wait an hour.

Tip: Bar seats are first-come, dining room takes reservations. The patio in mild weather is the play.

Tip: Cold appetiser cabinet near the door has marinated beef and tendon that are the menu's quiet stars.

Tip: Katy is 30 miles west of Houston. Combine with H Mart and Asian Town. The Woodlands second location is the other option.

Pondicheri in Houston is Anita Jaisinghani's modern Indian room at WestAve on Kirby Drive since 2011, with masala omelette breakfasts, thali plates.

Order: Masala omelette and roti at breakfast. The thali plate at dinner. The Bake Lab's chai bun for the road.

Tip: Breakfast (7am to 11am) is the lesser-known peak. The thali changes daily; ask first.

The Original Ninfa's on Navigation in Houston is Ninfa Laurenzo's 1973 Tex-Mex room, the birthplace of the restaurant fajita, still serving skirt steak tacos.

Tip: Weekday lunch buffet is the value entry. BYOB, with a corner liquor store across Hillcroft.

London Sizzler in Houston is the British-Indian-Pakistani room in the Olympic Center on the Southwest Freeway, with mixed-grill sizzlers, tandoori lamb chops.

Order: Mixed-grill sizzler for two. Tandoori lamb chops. A sweet lassi.

Tip: Kitchen runs late on weekends, to 11pm. Closed Mondays Walk-ins usually OK.

The Original Marini's Empanada House in Houston is the Argentine family kitchen on Westheimer in Westchase since 2007 (1971 in Montrose), with 80 savoury.

Signature: Beef empanadas, Argentine flan

Order: Classic beef empanada (baked, the original), the corn empanada, the dulce de leche dessert version.

Tip: Order half-dozen mixed (savoury) plus a single sweet to taste. The fried versions are heavier; baked is closer to the Argentine original.

Lankford Grocery & Market ★ 4.4

Lankford Grocery & Market in Houston is the 1939 corner-store-turned-burger-shack on Dennis Street in Midtown, with the Grim burger, weekday breakfast.

Order: The Grim (a Hatch chile burger with American cheese, jalapenos and house sauce).

Tip: Cash and card. Closed weekends. Sit at the picnic tables outside; the indoor counter is a single bench.

Eight Row Flint in Houston is the Heights icehouse from Agricole Hospitality in a converted Citgo gas station on Yale Street, with brisket tacos.

Tip: The patio under the old gas station canopy is the seat. East End second location for a different crowd.

Tip: The Navigation flagship is the original; other locations exist citywide. Patio in cool weather.

Tiny Boxwoods in Houston is the garden-cafe on West Alabama in the Thompson + Hanson nursery, with a chocolate chip cookie that became a Houston object.

Order: The chocolate chip cookie warm with milk. Whichever pizza is on. Salad of the day at lunch.

Tip: Brunch on weekends draws a 90-minute line. Weekday lunch is the move. Order an extra dozen cookies for home.

Tip: Cash strongly preferred. Closed Sundays. The pho here is solid but the banh mi is the reason.

Goode Company Barbeque on Kirby Drive in Houston is Jim Goode's 1977 mesquite-smoked barbecue room, the city's introduction to commercial Texas barbecue.

Order: Brisket and a jalapeno pork sausage link. Jambalaya. Pecan pie to close.

Tip: Multiple Goode Company locations across Houston exist. The Kirby flagship is the original and the only one with the screened porch.

Hugo's in Houston is Hugo Ortega's regional Mexican room on Westheimer since 2002, a James Beard winner with cochinita pibil, chiles en nogada in season.

Tip: Sunday brunch books two weeks out. Lunch on weekdays is the easier slot.

Killen's Barbecue in Pearland is Ronnie Killen's smokehouse on East Broadway, a Michelin Bib Gourmand 2025 pick with a Texas beef rib that defined Houston.

Order: The Texas beef rib. Brisket fatty. The creamed corn.

Tip: Lunch only Tuesday through Saturday; sold out by mid-afternoon. The beef rib runs out first; order on entry.

Truth BBQ ★ 4.8

Texas Barbecue$$the-heights

Truth BBQ in Houston is Leonard Botello IV's Heights Boulevard smokehouse since 2019, with post-oak-smoked brisket regularly ranked on Texas Monthly's Top 50.

Signature: Brisket, Strawberry cake

Order: Brisket fatty. The strawberry cake (the legend of Truth). Pulled pork.

Tip: Wed to Sun lunch only until sold out, usually 2 to 3pm. Get there by 11am for brisket.
