First-time visitor, two days2 days

Two days built around the dishes the Aragonese left behind, the bastion terraces at sunset and one drive out to the Nurra vineyards behind the town.

  1. Day 1: Saturday: market morning, Catalan lunch, bastion sunset

    Morning
    Mercato Civico on Via Sassari at 08:30 while the fishmongers still have the morning's landings, then a brioche and a custard tart at Pasticceria Tarragona on Via Venti Settembre.
    Afternoon
    Lunch at La Lepanto on Via Carlo Alberto: a raw seafood plate first, then aragosta alla catalana under raw tomato and sweet onion.
    Evening
    Aperitivo on the Cafè Latino terrace on the Bastioni Magellano, then dinner at Al Tuguri on Via Maiorca and a last glass at L'Altra Vineria.
  2. Day 2: Sunday: focaccia, the Nurra vineyards, paella at the beach

    Queue at Bar Focacceria Milese on Via Garibaldi for a Focaccia del Milese, eaten standing opposite the port.

    Drive 12 kilometres out to Tenute Sella & Mosca at I Piani for a Torbato tasting in the enoteca, which opens daily; the guided cellar visits run on weekdays only.
    Evening
    Back down to Maria Pia for Algherese paella at La Pergola, then a cocktail at Maracaibo with your feet in the sand on Via Lido.

Alghero in low season: sea urchin and the old town ★ 4.4

Winter and spring visitor, two days2 days

The months when Alghero belongs to itself, built around the regulated sea urchin season, the covered market and the kitchens that stay open through the quiet weeks.

  1. Day 1: Day one: the port market, urchin pasta, a tasting menu

    Morning
    Down to the first-catch market on the Banchina Rafael Catardi from 07:30, while the Alghero boats are still selling the morning's urchins and fish off the quay.
    Afternoon
    Lunch at Rafel on Via Lido for spaghetti ai ricci while the season is open, taken on the covered veranda over the sand.
    Evening
    Dinner at Musciora on Via Mazzini, where a father and son walk you through a Sardinian tasting menu plate by plate.
  2. Day 2: Day two: Catalan sweets, a cheese counter, a late wine

    Morning
    Breakfast at Deliciós on Via Don Minzoni, then across town to Bon Bons on Via Einaudi for menjar blanc and a box of ous de butxaca.
    Afternoon
    A tasting board of Marghine pecorino and Sardinian farm cured meat at Isola Forma on Piazza della Mercede.
