Frankfurt weekend: market, Main and Bembel ★ 4.6

First-time visitor, two days2 days

A weekend built on the city's three pillars: the Kleinmarkthalle at full Saturday roar, an evening in the Sachsenhausen apfelwein quarter, and a slow Sunday along the museum bank of the Main.

  1. Day 1: Saturday: Kleinmarkthalle, Altstadt coffee, tavern night

    Morning
    Kleinmarkthalle from 09:00. Queue at Metzgerei Schreiber's stand 8 for hot Fleischwurst, then carry a glass up to the Rollanderhof Weinterrasse on the gallery.
    Afternoon
    Cross into the rebuilt Altstadt. Espresso at The Holy Cross Brewing Society on Fahrgasse, then cake at Iimori on Braubachstraße before walking the Römerberg.
    Evening
    Over the bridge to Sachsenhausen. Start with Schnitzel and Grüne Soße at Apfelwein Wagner, move to Lorsbacher Thal for an apfelwein flight, and finish late at Klapper 33.

  2. Day 2: Sunday: riverside breakfast, museum bank, German dinner

    Morning
    Sunday breakfast at OOSTEN from 10:00, under the harbour crane with the skyline across the Main.
    Afternoon
    Walk the Museumsufer west. Coffee and cake in the sculpture garden of the Café im Liebieghaus between museum stops.
    Evening
    Dinner at Franziska on Hainer Weg, one of the few polished rooms cooking on a Sunday night, for reworked German classics.

Bahnhofsviertel: one Friday, morning to 02:00 ★ 4.4

Food-focused night owl, one day1 day

One Friday inside Germany's most argued-over square kilometre: bakery breakfast, South Indian lunch, gelato on Kaiserstraße and a Bib Gourmand dinner that runs late.

  1. Day 1: Friday: Kaiserstraße by day, Moselstraße by night

    Morning
    Breakfast at Zeit für Brot on Kaiserstraße 36, cinnamon roll and filter coffee, then walk the district while it is still yawning.
    Afternoon
    Masala dosa lunch at Saravanaa Bhavan, then a cone at Eis Fontanella at Kaiserstraße 33 while the street changes shift.
    Evening
    Dinner at YALDY on Moselstraße, shared plates and natural wine, then stay on at the bar as the room fills up. Late hunger ends at Bayram Kebap-Haus on Münchener Straße.

The apfelwein pilgrimage, orchard to Bembel ★ 4.5

Cider obsessive, two days2 days

Two days through Frankfurt's cider culture: the classic Sachsenhausen houses first, then the self-pressing outliers, the orchard hill where the apples grow, and the tram that pours while it drives.

  1. Day 1: Friday: Sachsenhausen, the canonical houses

    Morning
    Open at Apfelwein Wagner when the doors unlock at 11:00. Handkäs mit Musik, a first Schoppen, and the room still quiet.
    Afternoon
    Long lunch at Dauth-Schneider on the Klappergasse corner, one of the few taverns pouring from midday, then walk the Brückenviertel lanes.
    Evening
    Fichtekränzi under the spruce wreath from 17:00, then finish out at Zur Buchscheer in the quiet south, where the house presses its own.

  2. Day 2: Saturday: the orchard, the village press, the tram

    Morning
    Ride the Ebbelwei-Express tram loop with a bottle and pretzels, the city's least serious and most beloved cider institution.
    Afternoon
    Out to the MainÄppelHaus on the Lohrberg for the orchard meadows, then down into Bornheim for a garden Schoppen at Apfelwein Solzer from 14:00.
    Evening
    End in Seckbach's lanes at Zum Rad, pouring its own pressing since 1806, the pilgrimage's rightful last stop.
