Go for: Fresh fish, Grey shrimp, North Sea catch

Tip: Come Wednesday to Saturday morning. The colonnade itself, built 1821, is worth the walk even off market hours.

On Wednesday morning the Markt in Bruges fills with a food and flower market under the Belfry, with cheese, produce and seasonal farmers' stalls.

Tip: Get there before noon. The market shares the square with the Belfry, so it is easy to pair with sightseeing.

't Zand Saturday Market ★ 4.2

Every Saturday morning the large food and general market spreads across 't Zand and Beursplein in Bruges, drawing locals more than tourists.

Tip: The biggest of the city markets. Come early for the food stalls before the crowds thicken toward noon.

Tip: South-west of the centre in Sint-Michiels, so a short ride out. The most local of the city's markets.

Diksmuids Boterhuis ★ 4.1

Diksmuids Boterhuis on Geldmuntstraat has been a Bruges food shop since 1936, with a counter of West Flemish cheeses, farmhouse bread and cured ham.

Go for: Cheese, Farmhouse bread, Cured ham

Tip: A picnic shop as much as a deli; build a canal-side lunch from the cheese and bread counter.
