The city's primary fresh-produce market, renovated and relaunched as A Praça, combining a traditional wet market with a modern food court. The ground floor.

Go for: Fresh fish, bacalhau, Minho pork products, regional cheese, local vegetables, morning produce shopping

Tip: Come at 07:30 Tuesday to Friday for the most active floor. The fish hall sells pataniscas de bacalhau to eat at the counter while the morning catch arrives.

Mercado São João ★ 4.6

A historic specialty grocery in continuous operation since 1894, described by Braga Cool as the cod mecca of the city. The shelves carry premium Portuguese.

Go for: Premium bacalhau cuts, Portuguese tinned fish and preserves, regional wines and ports, quality olive oil

Tip: The wine cellar section has bottles not found in any other retail location in Braga. Ask about the rare regional vinhão and aged ports from small Minho producers.

Tip: The Serra da Estrela cheese changes character by season. The runny, fully ripe version in autumn and winter is dramatically different from the firmer summer wheels. Ask which is available.

Tip: Come for lunch on a Saturday when the kiosk variety is at its fullest. The bacalhau assado (roast cod) kiosk typically sells out by 14:00.

Docaria São Vicente ★ 4.5

Founded in 1829, the oldest food specialist in Braga sells conventual sweets unavailable elsewhere: moletinhos, fidalguinhos and massapães made to order.

Tip: Pre-order a mixed gift box of 24 pieces 24 hours ahead for the widest selection. Walk-in purchases depend on daily production.

Mercado Biológico de Braga ★ 4.1

Braga's weekly organic farmers market occupies Praça do Bocage on Saturday mornings, with producers from the Minho region bringing certified organic.

Go for: Certified organic Minho vegetables, seasonal fruit, free-range eggs, artisan honey, wild mushrooms (autumn)

Tip: The organic market is for direct-from-farm buying; prices are higher than the municipal market but the traceability is total. Bring a bag and arrive by 09:00 for the widest selection.

Frigideiras do Cantinho Shop ★ 4.7

The pastry counter at Frigideiras do Cantinho is the best address for Braga's rarest conventual sweets: frigideiras, tíbias and sameirinhos since 1796.

Tip: Frigideiras do Cantinho packages gift boxes of mixed pastry for taking home or as gifts. A box of 12 mixed pieces makes an excellent regional gift.

Campo das Carvalheiras Antiques and Food Fair ★ 4.2

A monthly open-air market in the Campo das Carvalheiras square that combines antiques and vintage goods with food stalls selling regional Minho products.

Go for: Artisan honey, smoked alheiras, regional cheese, vintage ceramics, Minho bread, seasonal preserves

Tip: The monthly frequency means the stall mix changes each edition. Food producers tend to concentrate at the southeastern end of the square nearest the old city wall.

Bracara Wine ★ 4.3

A cellar-format wine shop near the cathedral with an expertly curated range of premium Portuguese bottles. The best address in Braga to buy a serious wine.

Go for: Premium Douro reds, Minho alvarinho whites, aged vinhão, vintage ports, Alentejo reds

Tip: Tell the team your budget and whether the wine is for now or to cellar. They will retrieve specifically from the back cellar and give detailed producer background.

Gastronomia de Braga Festival Stalls ★ 4.4

During July's annual Gastronomia Festival on two consecutive weekends, Campo das Carvalheiras becomes an outdoor food market of Minho regional dishes.

Go for: Regional Minho dishes, vinho verde tastings, bacalhau preparations, frigideiras and tíbias at festival prices

Tip: The Friday opening night (18:00) is less crowded than the Saturday peak. The cooking demonstrations by Braga chefs run in the late afternoon on both Saturdays.
