Kauppatori, the open-air market on the South Harbour, is where herring boats tie up each October; summer stalls fry vendace and pile up Finnish berries.
Tip: Best in summer for fried lake fish and berries, and during the October herring market. Watch for aggressive seagulls.
The open square outside Hakaniemi hall hosts a daytime produce market, busiest in berry season when strawberries, blueberries and chanterelles fill it.
Tip: Pair the outdoor square with the indoor hall next door. Summer berry season is the time to come for chanterelles and strawberries.
Hakaniemi Market Hall reopened in 2023 after a full renovation; the two-floor Kallio-waterfront hall is the everyday local market, lunch counters above.
Tip: Less touristed than the harbour hall and more of a working market. The upstairs counters are the value lunch play.
