Brugse Zot Blond is a 6% golden blond speciality beer from De Halve Maan on Walplein; a darker 7.5% Dubbel carries the same name, after the Brugse Zotten.
De Halve Maan has brewed in the centre of Bruges since Leon Maes took over in 1856, and six generations of his family have run it. Xavier Vanneste, the sixth generation, launched Brugse Zot in 2005. The brewery says the name comes from Emperor Maximilian of Austria's words: 'Close all the gates of Bruges and you have a zothuis (madhouse)'. Since 2016 the beer travels to the bottling plant through a 3.3 km underground pipeline, and an unfiltered Brugse Zot is served only at the brewery.
