How San Luis Obispo came to eat the way it does: the people, migrations and accidents that shaped the plate.
How San Luis Obispo came to eat the way it does: the people, migrations and accidents that shaped the plate.
Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, founded in 1772 as the fifth of California's missions, organised the valley's first agriculture. Mission-era plantings of grapes, olives and wheat set the template, and the town that grew around the plaza kept eating from the surrounding ranchland long after secularisation.
Cantonese merchant Ah Louis opened his Palm Street store in 1874, serving the Chinese labourers who built the county's railroads. A compact Chinatown grew around it, and Mee Heng Low, woking chop suey since 1927, still serves noodles across from the old store, the neighbourhood's last working kitchen.
When Highway 101 turned San Luis Obispo into California's favourite overnight stop, Alex and Phyllis Madonna answered with the Madonna Inn in 1958: oak-pit steaks, rock waterfalls and pink champagne cake. Roadside institutions from coffee shops to hot dog stands date from these motel decades.
The Thursday night farmers' market began in 1983 as a way to pull crowds back downtown and became the city's weekly food festival, barbecue pits included. Edna Valley won AVA status the previous year, and its cool-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay now define the glass poured beside SLO's tri-tip.
