Mercado dos Lavradores opened in Funchal in 1940 to Edmundo Tavares's design, tiled front, fish hall downstairs and tropical fruit upstairs.

Go for: Tropical fruit, Scabbard fish, Madeira bananas, Passion fruit

Tip: Go before 09:00 for the fish hall. Saturday shuts at 14:00 and Sunday is closed entirely.
