What is in season in Cleveland. and what to order when the market changes.

Spring

  • Lake Erie walleye: Ohio's spring walleye season opens in April and runs through November. Fresh fillets land at West Side Market fishmongers and at white-tablecloth rooms like Pier W and Blue Point Grille from late April onward.
  • Paczki: The Polish jelly-filled doughnut is eaten on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent begins. Presti's and Corbo's in Little Italy and Rudy's Strudel in Parma run paczki days every February.
  • Ramps and morels: Foraged from Appalachian Ohio woodlands in April and May. Larder Delicatessen and Cordelia put them on tasting menus for the four-week window.
  • Lenten fish fries: Polish, Slovak and Slovenian parishes across Slavic Village, Tremont and Parma run Friday fish fries through Lent. Perch, pierogi and cabbage rolls anchor the plate.

Summer

  • Ohio sweet corn: Peak window is mid-July through Labor Day. The North Union Farmers Market at Shaker Square, the Coit Road Farmers Market and Kamm's Corners Farmers Market all run Saturday corn-and-tomato peaks in August.
  • Lake Erie yellow perch: Summer is peak perch season for the central basin. Pier W and West Side Market fishmongers run weekly perch features, and the Friday fish fry tradition continues at parishes year-round.
  • Heirloom tomatoes: August peak at every farmers market, especially Tremont Farmers Market on Tuesday afternoons and the North Union Saturday markets. Local farms across Geauga and Lorain Counties supply the city's tomato-on-toast menus.
  • Stone fruit and berries: Northeast Ohio's farm belt peaks for peaches in late July, blueberries through August and Bartlett pears in September. Patterson Fruit Farm in Chesterland and Mapleside Farms in Brunswick run pick-your-own seasons.

Autumn

  • Apple harvest: Mapleside Farms in Brunswick, Patterson Fruit Farm in Chesterland and Eddy Fruit Farm in Chesterland run pick-your-own from early September through late October. Cider and donuts are the staple weekend snack.
  • Concord and Catawba grapes: The Lake Erie wine belt along the North Coast Wine Trail (Geneva-on-the-Lake, Madison, Conneaut) brings native-grape Concord and Catawba into press from late September through October. Old Firehouse Winery and Debonne Vineyards run harvest weekends.
  • Pumpkins and squash: October at every farmers market. Mapleside Farms and Patterson Fruit Farm in Geauga County run pumpkin-picking and farm-festival weekends through October.

Winter

  • Pierogi for Wigilia: Polish, Slovak and Slovenian Christmas Eve suppers center on potato-and-cheese pierogi, fish and barszcz beet soup. Parishes across Slavic Village and Parma run pierogi sales through Advent.
  • Slovenian potica and Italian struffoli: Yeasted walnut roll for Slovenian Christmas, honey-glazed fried dough balls for the Italian Feast of the Seven Fishes. Presti's and Corbo's bake potica and struffoli through December.
  • Indoor West Side Market: The 1912 indoor hall runs Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday year-round, closed Tuesdays and Sundays. Winter is the easiest time to navigate the meat and dairy counters without a queue.
