What is in season in Sacramento. and what to order when the market changes.
Spring
April and May are the Sacramento Delta asparagus harvest, sold roadside near Isleton and at the Midtown Farmers Market. Strawberries from Yolo County arrive in late April, followed by cherries and the first apricots. Hangtown Fry returns to brunch menus across the city.
Summer
June is the Crawdad Festival in Isleton and the start of Delta crawfish boils. July brings Capay Valley tomatoes, peaches and nectarines, the California State Fair at Cal Expo, and the Sutter Buttes melon harvest. August is corn, sweet peppers and the Capay Tomato Festival at Full Belly Farm.
Autumn
September is the Farm to Fork festival on Capitol Mall and the Tower Bridge Dinner, the city's signature food week. October is Apple Hill apple-picking on the Camino-Placerville Road, with apple cider, apple donuts and apple pie at every farm. Olive harvest at Yolo Press and the El Dorado County wineries shifts into release mode.
Winter
December through March is citrus season from the Central Valley orchards: mandarins from Lincoln, Meyer lemons, blood oranges. The Sacramento River Delta brings winter Dungeness crab to the docks at Walnut Grove. The Sunday Market under the freeway at 8th and W stays year-round with greens, brassicas and winter squash.
